What is Food Cling Wrap?
Food cling wrap, also known as plastic wrap, food wrap, or cling film, is a thin, flexible plastic material used to seal and preserve food. It is commonly made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or low-density polyethylene (LDPE), both of which offer excellent elasticity and the ability to cling tightly to surfaces. This wrap is widely used in kitchens and food packaging to cover plates, bowls, and containers, keeping food fresh by protecting it from air, moisture, and contaminants. Cling wrap is transparent, allowing for easy visibility of contents, and is popular for both household and commercial food preservation.
PVC cling wrap is known for its excellent stretchability and ability to create a tight seal, making it ideal for wrapping food items securely. LDPE cling wrap, on the other hand, is often used when a more eco-friendly option is preferred due to its recyclability.
Cling wraps come in various sizes to meet the needs of both household kitchens and commercial food establishments. For home use, rolls usually range from 30cm to 45cm in width, while restaurant and catering-grade wraps can go up to 60cm or more, offering longer rolls for greater coverage and efficiency in food preparation and storage. These larger sizes are particularly suited for wrapping bulk food items or covering large trays and containers in professional kitchens.
Key Differences Between Stretch Film and Food Cling Wrap
Stretch film and food cling wrap are both plastic wraps, but they serve different purposes. Stretch film is mainly used for industrial packaging to wrap and secure large items, such as pallets or boxes, during shipping. It’s thicker, stronger, and more durable than cling wrap, and it’s designed to stretch and hold heavy loads tightly in place.
On the other hand, food cling wrap is thinner and more flexible, specifically designed for food preservation. It clings to plates, bowls, and food items to keep them fresh by protecting them from air and moisture. While stretch film is used in industrial settings, cling wrap is typically found in kitchens and food-related environments.
